Bilingual lexicography in Japan: the Dutch‐Japanese to the English‐Japanese dictionary

This paper discusses the earlier bilingual lexical traditions in Japan with special reference to Japanese and European languages. The earliest contact was with Portuguese which resulted in Vocabylario da lingoa Iapam (1603), then came Western influence on Yedo (Tokyo) particularly with the Dutch. This contact resulted in several translations and bilingual lexical lists. The contact with English started in Nagasaki around 1809 and then, slowly, Dutch gave way to English. This study discusses the transition from the Dutch‐Japanese to the English‐Japanese dictionaries.
