This paper reports on the effectiveness of using creative writing in English to increase cross‐cultural understanding. The study involved Japanese businessmen at the Japan America Institute of Management Science in Honolulu, Hawaii, using portions of a Japanese novel (44 pages of Balloon Top , written originally in English by Nobuko Albery) and a Thai novel (22 pages of Little Things written originally in English by Prajuab Thirabutana). The results indicate that this kind of creative writing can be an extremely valuable way to increase the interest in and understanding of other cultures outside the formal classroom.
