The French surcomposés or double compound forms have aroused the interest of twentieth‐century linguists as a form perceived to be on the margins of acceptable French grammar. It is important therefore to consider how they have been described and analysed not only in contemporary grammars but also in descriptions of French of past ages. This paper offers a comprehensive and systematic study of the treatment of the surcomposés in over 150 works published on French from the earliest examples to the present day.
