This article examines the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) upon local economic development policies. While ICT policies have been a fast growing area of interest for local policy makers, there has been little attempt to discover the merits, or otherwise, of such policies. In part this can be traced back to the use of either an ‘information economy’ approach or a simplistic post‐Fordist analysis as the theoretical justification for such policies. In this article we explore the use of a regulation theory approach to examine the limits to such policies.
