Summary A simple method for trapping diatoms (algae) which live in sediments is described. These microscopic plants. which form the basis for many food chains, can be found in very large numbers and so some means for estimating populations is required. Some simple statistical studies are reported, which dealt with large population estimates and were carried out by first form secondary pupils. Suggestions for work with older pupils are also given.
