Summary This article discusses one of the predecessors of modern statistics: the German university teaching tradition called Staotenkunde or Statistik, the reaction of this tradition to people who started at the end of the eighteenth century to order available (mostly numerical) information in tables, and the probable source for the word “statistics”.
