Summary The conventional approach for introducing statistics to beginning students is to start with descriptive measures such as histograms, means and standard deviations, followed by other technical notions. The problem of such an approach is lack of motivation. It is useful to introduce students, at an early stage, to an overview of the statistical approach used to obtain the desired information. Accordingly, schematic models for the purpose of introducing two fundamental designs for statistical investigation are presented in this article.
