Alma Harris presents some findings from a research project which explored the characteristics of schools which were demonstrating raised levels of pupil achievement. All the schools were located in city contexts. The article contends that a school's commitment to staff development and continuous improvement are important pre‐requisites of enhanced pupil achievement. It further argues that there are common and identifiable components of sustained improvement. Certain collaborative processes are conducive to this effect.
