The recollections of schooling by forty‐seven adults attending the Winchester Dyslexic Institute were investigated through the use of a questionnaire. The results revealed that many of these adults remember their schooling as a series of unhappy and distressing experiences. Their recollections can be interpreted as revealing a typical cyclical pattern of failure at school which continues to have long‐lasting and deeply negative consequences that should be of interest and concern to all teachers.
