After considerable teaching experience, Alan Combes is shifting his opinion regarding mixed‐ability teaching. He has taken his thinking and practice back to a modified curriculum with emphasis on literacy development. Unshackled from the examination system, he reports on a greater freedom of movement and joy in the learning process. No doubt this will strike a chord with some of our readers.
