A commonly held belief is that children with learning difficulties are incapable of learning a foreign language. This persists in spite of growing evidence to the contrary. The problem lies not so much with the nature of the subject but with its presentation. Colin Asher and Gary Chambers have explored this area with students using a variety of stimulating techniques. There are no miracles to report but there were noticeable gains in achievement and confidence. Similarly, the student teachers appear to have been stimulated by the experience.
