Increasingly, the work of Usha Goswami and her colleagues at Cambridge is coming to the attention of teachers. Given the emphasis now accorded to the teaching of phonics in the National Curriculum, some traditional approaches have been resurrected, in spite of the dubious evidence for their effectiveness. The teaching of phonological skills by analogy, advocated by Goswami, is not only fresh but considerably more logical. We can expect to hear more about this technique.
