Within the next few years all schools will be subject to inspection, a particularly important aspect of which will be the nature and effectiveness of special needs provision. Here Maria Landy takes us through the background, rationale, documentation and procedures for such an inspection. It becomes clear that it would be extremely unwise for a school to wait until the last moment before putting its house in order. The advice given is straightforward and sensible. It is accompanied by a useful checklist and will enable schools to identify weaknesses in advance of an inspection. The message is clear: time given now to preparation will yield big dividends at a later date.
