Gerda Hanko's work will be well known to many of our readers. In the previous article, Daniels, Norwich and Anghileri draw heavily on her theories with their emphasis on teacher collaboration and mutual support. Here, however, the scene is the former East German Republic. The rapid importation of Western ideas is clearly causing difficulties but the approaches pioneered by Hanko are proving to be acceptable. This article provides a fascinating glimpse into a country having to make very sudden and dramatic changes.
