Experienced teachers have long been aware of the contribution the arts make to individuals and the reciprocal benefits that can often accrue in terms of academic performance and enhanced emotional and social development. Jean Hull is a passionate defender of the arts in the curriculum. Here she vigorously takes up the case on behalf of those with special educational needs. She concludes that pressures to minimise these inputs, or crudely assess them, should be resisted.
