Research into reading has become increasingly concerned with the concept of metacognition and its application to the development of children's reading and comprehension. In parallel with this has been the developing practice within primary schools of using novel studies as a vehicle for introducing ‘higher order reading skills’. Laura‐Ann Currie reviews this and also introduces us to the Scottish Consultative Council on the curriculum document English Language 5–14: Curriculum Assessment in Scotland ‐ A policy for the 90's. Her conclusion is that the novel is indeed an appropriate medium for the development of metacomprehension skills.
