The plight of the homeless has recently been brought home to us by dramatic pictures of ‘Cardboard City’ and other sad examples of what life can be like at the bottom of society. Susan Lines' illustrations tell us what is happening, almost literally, on our doorstep. HMI have acknowledged what the effect of living in temporary accommodation has on children, as their recent report illustrates. This, inevitably, will lead to many referrals to educational psychologists and special needs teachers. Susan Lines' account is timely and her recommendations apposite. Again we face the distressing prospect of escalating social problems accompanied, in many instances, with a reduction in professional services.
