In previous issues of Support for Learning , Alan Dyson has examined basic assumptions about the nature of special needs and the roles of various participants. Mel Ainscow and Susan Hart continue that debate, focusing on the function of ‘outsiders’, i.e. those who seek to advise or train teachers. There is a huge amount of uncertainty in this field. External demands and pressures raise serious questions about traditional forms of staff development. This then is a timely input. Ainscow and Hart offer a conceptual map for moving practice forward and three broad principles for the promotion of collaborative work with teachers.
