Rhona Johnston has undertaken an interesting comparison between Scottish and New Zealand children's acquisition of phonic skills. Her research leads her to the conclusion that phonics must be taught systematically and not in some incidental fashion. Further, the earlier it is introduced, the more effective it is likely to be. This forms part of our ongoing debate on reading standards and provision.
