Sarah Sandow and Philip Garner assess the value of two on‐site units set up for disruptive pupils. Although a questionnaire revealed differences in philosophy and practice, both units had been well received, offering, as they did, some respite for staff and pupils. Overall the authors are optimistic about such provision but regret that further experimentation might be inhibited by demands for ‘cost‐effective’ strategies.
