. The paper focuses on the distribution of object clitics in West Flemish. The morphology of the clitics suggests that they are characterized by the lack of number specification. It is proposed that in order to be referential and to be assigned a thematic role clitics must associate with an AGR head. The movement of the clitic to this functional head is a two‐step process: (i) scrambling of XP‐scrambling being A‐movement in West Flemish, (ii) movement of the head of XP to the functional head, with possible further head to head movement. Such an approach leads us to postulate a recursive head‐initial functional projection in the IP domain in West Flemish. The head of this functional projection will host clitics; the specifier is the landing site for scrambled NPs.
