Two stages are considered in the evolution of the Basque‐Caucasian hypothesis: (a) “pre‐scientific”, based on a coincidence of the names of the two Iberias‐that of the Iberian Peninsula and of the Caucasus‐in ancient Greek and Roman sources; (b) “scientific”, involving the search for genetic and typological links of the Basque culture and language. In this connection, the importance of the decipherment of Iberian inscriptions of the Peninsula is noted. Comparative‐historical and typological approaches in Basque‐Caucasian studies are reviewed and illustrated by the results of the author's research.
