This paper discusses some markers of textual structure and their potential role in guiding the reader through an English expository text. A text is seen as a network of relations realizing both global structure encompassing the whole text and local relations between adjacent sentences. A prerequisite for a successful expository text is that readers perceive these structural relations. To ensure this, writers have certain devices at their disposal. The use and effects of some explicit markers of textual structure are discussed and exemlified. In clarifying the relations between various parts of a text these signals help in distinguishing between those portions which realize the writer's central goals and other portions which have a commenting and supporting nature.
