Summary A measurement is a systematic determination of quantities the nature of which is in principle well‐known. It is pointed out and illustrated by a number of examples from the history of Physics that many of the outstanding scientific discoveries were not the outcome of measurements. Measuring techniques are an essential part of the scientists handicraft but should never stand in the way of observing qualitatively new phenomena.
