Summary. Results of experience may be based to a great extent on regularity of the phenomena observed and this is the fundamental base of statistics. When comparing social sciences with technical or physical sciences, it must be emphasized that in the latter one single case may already be a subject of study, whereas in the social sciences observation relates generally to a multitude of facts. So the bearth of one of the oldest social sciences–economics–is the same as that of statistics. Other social sciences are still somewhat shy to use statistical methods. A special feature is the need for economy when collecting figures, which has lead to an amazing development of sampling techniques. Moreover the use of mathematics in analysing statistical problems is mentioned.
