Summary: Optimum allocation in nested sampling. A problem of optimum allocation in nested sampling is considered [1, 2, 3]. In practice it turned out that, though considerable savings could be realized, the known formulae often do not sufficiently approximate the true optimum sample numbers. This is the case where small samples, unfavourable ratios of costs and variances, or designs with more than two classifications, are concerned. The departures are caused by the discrete character of the problem, whereas the formulae hold for continuous cases. A method for optimum allocation, which takes the discrete character of sample numbers into account, is given together with an example of its application.
