Summary A case study of statistical detection In a medical investigation the data proved to be of insufficient accuracy to arrive at definite conclusions. No control observations were available to estimate the accuracy. However, speculations of a reasonable character aiming at the elimination of the least accurate observations led to a clear issue. This may serve as an example of the use of statistics as a mean of detection, to be followed eventually by a well designed new experiment for proof.
