Summary Inaugural speech. Industrial statistics had their origin in Germany, where in the 1920s Daeves published a large number of papers on this subject. A short time afterwards statistical work in the field of electrical engineering was started in America. It resulted in numerous articles in the Bell System Technical Journal, and in 1931 culminated in the publication of Shewhart's classical work. An early publication in the Netherlands is the report submitted by van Ettinger during the “Efficiency days” in 1930, while in 1954 Schaafsma and Willemze published the first Netherlands standard work on quality control.
