A historical and sociological re‐reading of the literature on a post Second World War epidemic of coronary heart disease provides some insight into ways in which public health texts may be analysed as official portraits of social problems. Historical epidemiology can be enriched by a careful consideration of the social processes underlying the designation and use of diagnostic categories.
