Summary Evidence from a small settlement in Tuscany suggests that even where people have face‐to‐face contact across a range of social contexts, the allocation of prestige and of leadership roles in voluntary associations may be made with relatively impersonal criteria. This is not what Wirth's argument, as modified by Dewey, would lead one to expect.
