Summary THE EFFECTS OF SOCIO‐ECONOMIC CHANGES OF A SPANISH PUEBLO ON COMMUNITY COHESION This paper discusses the effect of economic and social changes on a small village of a hundred people situated in the Spanish Pyrenees. Although on the margin of urbanised Spanish society, this community is increasingly dependent on forces that originate outside the village: the influence initially of industrial migrants, and latterly, tourists and land developers. As the composition of the community has changed it has become increasingly difficult for groups of people in the village to regard themselves as part of a collective entity with shared traditions and institutions. The changes in Gema, and the responses to those changes, provide a commentary on the way rural communities relate to largely urban and national social systems.
