THE RURAL‐URBAN CONTINUUM: A REPLY TO EUGENLUPRI

SUMMARY It is argued that ‘rural’ and gemeinschaft should not be used as interchangeable terms and there are a number of overlapping continua between ‘rural’ and ‘urban’, variously defined. Lupri shows a statistical correlation related to settlement size but does not demonstrate the sociological significance of this. The contention that rural‐urban differences in W. Germany or U.S.A. are ‘crucial’ is questioned: there appears to be considerable ambiguity in his interpretation of his own work and also of other literature in the U.S.A. Further thoughts on this topic are considered in relation to the economic base and level of technology: the problem of scale and the occupational continuum are considered to be closely tied to the economic substructure. A recent attempt to measure urbanization is seen as a way of making the continuum an operational concept. However, recent criticisms of the reification of concepts are well taken and emphasis is still put on the relationships between the small‐scale and the large‐scale as an important field of study. RÉSUMÉ L'auteur montre que les termes «rural» et «gemeinschaft» ne devraient pas être considérés comme interchangeables et qu'il existe un grand nombre de continua «rural‐urbain» se chevauchant, très diversement définis. Lupri met en évidence une corrélation statistique d'après les dimensions des habitats mais n'en démontre pas la signification sociologique. L'affirmation selon laquelle les différences entre le rural et l'urbain en Allemagne de l'Ouest et aux U.S.A. sont essentielles, est remise en cause. Il apparaît en effet, qu'il y a une très grande ambiguïté dans l'interprétation que l'auteur fait de son propre travail et d'autres études américaines. Des réflexions sont poursuivies sur ce point en relation avec les bases économiques et le niveau technologique. Les problèmes de dimension et le continuum des métiers sont considérés comme liés étroitement à l'infrastructure économique. Une récente tentative de mesure de 1'urbanisation est envisagée comme moyen de faire du continuum un concept opérationnel. Cependant, on a bien tenu compte des récentes critiques sur la materialisation des concepts et l'accent est maintenu sur les relations entre grande et petite dimension comme important domaine d'étude. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG ‘Rural’ und ‘Gemeinschaft’ sollten nicht als austauschbare Begriffe verwendet werden. Zwischen ihnen liegt eine Anzahl sich überschneidender Übergangserscheinungen, die unterschiedlich definiert werden. Lupri erklärt, daß es eine statistische Korrelation zur Gemeinde‐große gibt, zeigt aber nicht ihren soziologischen Bezug. Die Behauptung, die Unterschiede zwischen Stadt und Land in Westdeutschland oder USA seien hier ‘entscheidend’ wird bezweifelt: die Interpretation seiner eigenen Arbeiten und auch anderer Literatur in den USA scheint nicht eindeutig zu sein. Weitere Überlegungen dazu beziehen sich auf die ökonomische Grundlage und den technologischen Entwicklungsstand: das Problem der Größenordnung und das Berufs‐Kontinuum werden in enger Abhängigkeit von dem wirtschaftlichen Unterbau gesehen. Ein neuer Versuch, den Urbanisierungsgrad zu messen, sollte die Möglichkeit bieten, das Kontinuum zu einem brauchbaren Konzept zu machen. Die neuere Kritik an der Materialisierung der Konzepte wird jedoch anerkannt und der Schwerpunkt liegt immer noch auf den Beziehungen zwischen der kleinen und der großen Dimension als einem wichtigen Forschungsgebiet.
