A strategy of retrospective observation was applied to the study of developmental change in moral judgment. Swedish‐speaking Finnish university students ( N=55 ) indicated their own previous as well as their present moral preferences on Rest's Defining Issues Test (DIT). In line with expectations derived from Kohlberg's theory of moral development, these “simulated” longitudinal data gave a general picture of developmental progress. Brief written descriptions by the subjects of changes in their own moral views were partly consistent with the simulated change indicated on the DIT.
