.— The assumption of a sign‐neutral level of information is made explicit. The categories of the outcome space in non‐verbatim learning are seen as fragments of human competence, which can be described only in terms of the content of its various strata. The structural identity of research on non‐verbatim learning and of non‐verbatim learning itself is pointed out in the second section of the article. The main problem in both cases is discovering an underlying structure sufficient to generate a given discourse. The possibility of finding a learning algorithm, i.e. a set of procedural rules applicable to any discourse is questioned. The relationship between the different levels of information cannot be made explicit even in a specific case, however, the model of description should be subject to testing in some instructional setting.
