Gabrielsson, A. Similarity ratings and dimension analyses of auditory rhythm patterns. II. Scand. J. Psychol., 1973, 14, 161–176.MdashSix experiments on experience of polyphonic rhythm patterns and of rhythm in music are described. The polyphonic rhythm stimuli were generated by an electronic device. The stimuli were presented in pairs for similarity ratings and verbal descriptions. The similarity ratings were analyzed by a model for individual differences in multidimensional scaling (INDSCAL). The dimensions were interpreted as “meter”, “rapidity”, “tempo”, “uniformity‐variation” or “simplicity‐complexity”, “basic pattern”, “movement character” and dimensions related to the spectrum, amplitude and decay characteristics of the stimuli. There were great inter‐individual differences in the subjects' weights for the different dimensions.
