NYBORG, H. Tactile stimulation and perception of the vertical. II. Effects of field dependency, arousal and cue function. Scand. J. Psychol. , 1971, 12, 135–143.–In a previous study subjects differed in capacity to profit from changes in tactile stimulation when given the Rod‐and‐Frame test (Nyborg, 1971a). According to theory, it was expected that field‐independent subjects would profit more than field‐dependent on change in tactile conditions from diffuse body reference to specific body reference stimulation. However, in the present analysis of the data field‐independent subjects differed widely. Intermediate scoring subjects profitted considerably. Field‐dependent subjects gained little and the intersubj ect differences in this group was small. The results are tentatively interpreted in terms of individual differences in level of arousal function and related differences in cue function.
