That summer my mother fell in love with a man who drove an American car. She had been a national school teacher since she was nineteen but she lost her job the previous Christmas because, she said, she couldn't believe in God or the educational System any more. So in the spring she packed up, took me out of fourth class and we moved to a small house in the middle of the country that belonged to one of her distant relatives.
