This article highlights the existence of systematic differences among organizational participants, and focuses on one distinct group of organizational participants, namely R & D personnel. An interactional model is then proposed. The model acknowledges the unique characteristics of research personnel, and describes the environment most likely to foster and enhance creativity and innovation of research personnel. Based on past research and the model, guidelines useful to managers of research personnel are offered throughout the article.
