Although the research literature has long recognized performance appraisal as an important individually‐oriented development tool, the developmental benefits of performance evaluation at the work‐unit or group level have generally been overlooked. This paper examines these benefits, emphasizing particularly the team‐building potential inherent in developing and using a set of appropriate, unit‐level performance indicators. The problems related to the development of such indicators, and methods for minimizing these difficulties, are also considered.
