This paper adds to and develops Argyris and Schön's notions of double‐loop and singleloop learning. On the basis of investigations made at a Norwegian shipyard, a distinction is made between single‐loop, double‐loop and deutero‐learning. The primary contribution of this paper is to argue that deutero‐learning goes beyond single‐loop and double‐loop learning, and justifies an extension of Argyris and Schön's Model II, which we characterise as Model III.
