This paper offers a contribution to entrepreneurship theory and aims to promote a new perspective of the phenomenon. It suggests that entrepreneurship may be conceived in two different modes: an evolutionary mode and a revolutionary mode. This distinction leads to a consideration of the differences between the two modes, and the nature of their interaction over time. It will be argued that this interaction leads to an alternation in the relative dominance of these two modes, and that this changes both the context and the significance of different types of entrepreneurial activities over time.
