Inventions are the economic fruits of a type of creative activity that can be highly dependent on imagination. They need some form of protection if investment to turn them into concrete reality is to be rational. This is because they consist of information, which is difficult to produce, but all too easy to reproduce. Our present arrangements for protecting inventions (i.e. patents) unfortunately leave much to be desired.
