There are many similarities and connections between the optimization of a single criterion and multicriteria optimization. Their exploitation does require care, and I shall explore some of the pitfalls. In general, I hope to illustrate the ease with which one may apply multicriteria optimization while at the same time illustrating the possible pitfalls. The central optimality concept is Edgeworth‐Pareto optimality; however, I shall also discuss some other optimality concepts. I close with a discussion of some boons and caveats in structural optimization.
