A new algorithm based on a time stepping BEM formulation for problems of transient or steadystate 2‐D groundwater flow is discussed. Of particular interest is the location of moving boundaries, such as the free surface in unconfined groundwater flow and/or the fresh‐salt water interface in coastal aquifers. A variety of transient external forcing functions, e.g., rainfall, tidal effects, etc., or combinations of the above, are considered. Numerical results from two example problems demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the proposed methodology.
