This paper describes the development of a knowledge Based System for predicting strategic maintenance in residential property. An initial feasiility study identified a need for the long term strategic planning of building maintence in Housing Association. However, conventional Maintenance Management programs require too much data input, are too inflexible, do not explain their results, and not permit their users to explore potential alternatives. The application of knowledge Based Systems's technology to this area directly addresses these problems. This paper examines the need for such systems, and describes the implementation of one such system using a Client Centered Mehodology. The paper concludes by discussing some of the problems that were encourtered during the systems's development, how they were overcome, and what lessons may be learned for future systems developmets.
