When an eagerly awaited standard is developed for a functional area such as graphics, the community of vendors and users heave a vast sigh of relief and begin to actively attempt to use it. Immediately, however, the potential user/implementor could be faced with a difficult problem: the required functions have been effectively defined in the body of the standard, but how does he access these functions in his world of higher level applications programming? The answer lies in the use of standard access mechanisms to the functions from the programming languages. These access mechanisms are called language bindings.
