troff itself is a sophisticated typesetting package, capable of driving a wide range of high quality typesetters through device specific postprocessors. There are a number of pre-processors for troff input, tbl for table layout, eqn for laying out mathematics and most recently pic [2,3] for drawing simple figures on a typesetter. One arguable drawback to pic is that it is not interactive, diagrams are described in a textual language in linear form.
