Television, which can nowadays look back on a 40-year history, is presently in the third phase of technological change. The first phase began with black and white television, the second with the introduction of coloured television (in the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1967) and now we have the third one, i.e. that of high definition television HDTV, which promises an image quality equal to that of 35 mm film or even better.
