For the first time, an article published in .Computer Graphics Forum has aroused a controversy! The article in question is the pqxr by Schoenhut and Contin in Vol. 3 No. 1, pp 71-78, entitled "Implementation and Comparison of Different Presentation Layer codings for Efficient Transfer of GKS MeUes". The article led a number of people to leap for their personal computers, calculators, slide rules or log tables (depending on age!) to try out the different coding schemes on their favourite examples and to look at possible modifications to improve the efficiency of the one of the coding schemes proposed for the IS0 metafile standard. In this issue we publish a paper by Straayer and Maynard which reports their findings, plus a reply from Schoenhut.
