Molecular biology is a field rich in problems in which visualization of the object under study is a central difficulty which computer graphics can largely overcome. The most powerful applications of computer graphics, however, are those in which the application software does not stop at picture preparation and display, but which perform some substantial task in the computer with the graphics, no longer an end in itself, being the vehicle of communication between that task and the user.
